Making Bloomington a better place to live one show at a time

Once upon there was a kid named Justin…

Once upon a time, before Kanye was jetting him off to tropical recording sessions and everyone and their mother was deservedly passing around For Emma, Forever Ago, Justin Vernon was a scruffy and slightly nervous performer making a stop on the Bear’s Place stage with his band Bon Iver with both the accolades and a proper release still on the horizon. Genial and nauseous, he played to a jam packed crowd who traveled from as far as Michigan and California to catch their first glimpse of what the folks in Wisconsin and over at Jagjaguwar already knew: something special was brewing.

Earlier that afternoon a ruddy Vernon stopped by the WIUX studios for some conversation and to play a song or three. The moment was captured by photographer and matriarch of Bluelinestyle Chelsea Sanders. Follow the link below for a photographic walk down memory lane.

This past Sunday the instrumental genius that is Balmorhea stopped by Russian Recording for a show with Dust From 1000 Years and Brother John. Photog Julia Rickles captured the evening and now I share what she saw with you. As an added bonus, I have included the live set from Brother John,  a 13-piece orchestra that 3 weeks and 2 practices ago didn’t exist. Remarkably, this was their first ever actual show with this lineup.
